First meeting for Ragnar 2013

We had our first meeting for Ragnar 2013 this week.  The amount of interest in the group has been phenomenal so far.  Before the meeting we had 34 Myriad employees express interest in running and fundraising with us, including one from New York.  In addition to that, we had another 13 patient advocates express interest.  With that many people, we are just one shy of having four full teams, which is fantastic.

Unfortunately, we currently only have two teams.  This means we had to come up with a way to prioritize entry.  We came up with the following scheme.

1. Anyone who was on the team last year and had to drop out would get an automatic entry.

2. Anyone who ran on the team last year and raised the minimum $500 in fundraising would get an automatic entry

3. Everyone else would be entered into a lottery to see who got the remaining spots.

4. Anyone who didn’t make it on would get put on a waitlist.

After I put all the names into my excel spreadsheet and ran my randomization algorithm, I think we ended up with a pretty good team.  Two of the people that were on the team last year ended up on the waitlist, but they are pretty high up, numbers two and four, so there is a good chance that they could end up on the team.  We went through nine backups last year.

The best thing to get everyone on would be to add a third team.  However, the Wasatch Back race is incredibly popular and coming by available teams is hard to do.  I’m still hopeful that we can get a third team.  If we can’t get Ragnar to donate one to us, there might be an opportunity to buy one on the open market.  I’d love to get as many people involved as possible.

Since there are so many people on the waitlist already, I think there is a good chance that we may get some of them to sign up with some of the other Hometown Heroes programs.  There’s a lot of good races around that they can get you into, even sold out ones.  If you’re interested in participating, you can see what events are available here.
